News outlets throughout the world have been running stories this month on the severe weather events that have led to heavy flooding in some parts of Peru.
The most affected areas are the cities located on the Pacific coast of northern Peru, including the cities of Tumbes, Piura, Trujillo, Chiclayo and Chimbote.
The heavy rainfall which has led to mudslides and flooding has been caused by what is known among meteorologists as a coastal El Niño event: the unusual proximity to the coast of warm ocean currents has led to rainfall on areas of Peru’s desert coast where rain does not normally occur. According to Peru’s Committee for the National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (ENFEN), which works closely with NOAA (the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the increased coastal ocean temperatures associated with this El Niño event are expected to continue into April, provoking continued heavy rainfall in parts of northern Peru.
Visitors to Peru traveling through Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, Colca Canyon and jungle areas accessed from the city of Cusco, where at present weather conditions are normal for the time of year, are currently not being affected by the recent flooding in other parts of Peru.
