This Christmas, once again the staff members of Andean Adventures traveled into the mountains high above the Sacred Valley of the Incas to deliver a little seasonal goodwill to the people of the remote village of Qelqanca.
We set off on Christmas Day and after the long drive to our destination spent the night in the village. Our group included office staff, guides and cooks, and some of us took along our families.
Early on the 26th, we prepared a breakfast of hot chocolate and sweet breads for our hosts. In total, 100 children and their parents joined us for a festive breakfast. That same morning, every child in the village received a toy, and we also distributed clothing to the young ones. Then it was time for a friendly soccer tournament, with three teams of villagers competing against our team, composed of guides and cooks.
Finally, the villagers thanked us for our efforts with their performance of the typical regional dance known as the huallata, which is the Quechua name for the Andean goose. Dressed in traditional costume, all the children from the village school participated in what was an excellent performance, ensuring that we were sent on our way happily in the afternoon.
