Ausangate Trek

The 6-day 5-night Ausangate Trek is the ideal choice for those seeking adventure involving trekking through wonderful scenery characterized by snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes and thermal pools. Walkers will also have the opportunity to meet local people along the way, and to observe herds of llamas and alpacas. Mount Ausangate (20,945 ft / 6384 m) is the highest and most sacred mountain in southern Peru, and this trek offers a unique experience.

Day 1: Cusco / Ocongate / Tinki / Upis

We will pick you up from your hotel for the drive southeast of Cusco, passing the communities of Qatca and Ocongate, where we will make brief stops before continuing to Tinki. The landscape changes gradually as we climb from the green Vilcanota valley to high altitude grasslands and get our first views of the Vilcanota range, including the peaks of Ausangate and Colqe Cruz.  After crossing the Mapacho River, we will pass typical local communities as we approach sacred Ausangate. We will camp for the night close to the thermal baths at Upis (14458 ft / 4408 m), where you will have the opportunity to bathe in the medicinal waters.

Day 2: Upis / Pucacocha Lake

Accompanied by our own personnel and pack animals we will cross the first pass at 14,760 ft (4500 m), before continuing to Lake Pucacocha (14,943 ft / 4556 m), and our second campsite.

Day 3: Pucacocha Lake / Palomani / Chillca

Today we will cross the highest pass at Palomani (15,748 ft / 4800 m). We will leave early, keeping Ausangate to our left and passing grazing herds of llamas and alpacas. As we cross the pass we will be met by spectacular views of the southeast mountain range, including the peaks of Mariposa and Caracol. If we are lucky, we may spot a solitary condor, the world's largest flying bird. Descending towards Pampacancha (15,252 ft / 4650 m), following the course of the Jampamayo River, we will pass through the community of Jampa before arriving at Chillca (14,615 ft / 4456 m), where we will camp.

Maximum altitude: 15,748 ft / 4800 m (Palomani pass)

Day 4: Chillca / Comercocha

Following the shore of Lake Ticllacocha, our route will take us up to the final pass (15,252 ft / 4650 m), among the mountains of the Vilcanota range, after which we will descend to the beautiful blue-green Lake Q'omercocha (15,429 ft / 4704 m), where we will camp.

Day 5: Comercocha / Pajchanta

Continuing our descent, we come to the community of Pajchanta (13,152 ft / 4010 m), where villagers live from livestock herding and farming. Along the way, there will be time to rest and bathe in picturesque natural thermal pools, surrounded by views of the encircling mountains.

Day 6: Pajchanta / Tinki / Cusco

Early in the morning we will complete the short hike to the village of Tinki, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.
