Malaria

Many travelers are concerned that there may be a risk of malaria when they visit Tambopata National Reserve, and ask how they can prevent infection. The risk of this disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes is present in Peru in Tambopata, Iquitos and Manu National Park. However, cases of malaria are rare in these zones. Nevertheless, we recommend that you take anti-malarial drugs.

You should consult your physician before departure regarding the appropriate drugs. Remember that you will need to take anti-malarial drugs (chemoprophylaxis) several days before departure. Also remember that anti-malarial drugs available in Peru may not necessarily match the manufacturing criteria for medicines produced in Europe and the United States.

According to recognized centers for disease control and prevention, the recommended drugs for malaria prophylaxis are doxycycline, mefloquine and atovaquone-proguanil.

Malaria is contracted from mosquito bites, and you can therefore take other preventive measures, such as using insect repellent on exposed areas of the skin and wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants.

Yellow fever virus (YFV)

This is a serious viral infection transmitted via mosquito bites. Risk areas in Peru include Tambopata and the regions of Loreto, San Martin, Ucayali and Amazonas.

Risk of contagion can be reduced by avoiding mosquito bites, but you should make sure you receive an effective vaccine. If you have received a yellow fever vaccination before departure, don’t forget to bring your certificate with you when you visit Tambopata.

Vaccinations are not mandatory for entering Peru, but they are highly recommended.

Please remember that the risk of contracting malaria or yellow fever in Tambopata is low, but nevertheless the appropriate precautions should be taken.
