Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain

We highly recommend doing this excursion in 2 days with a night’s camping. This will give you the chance to visit Pitumarca and Machupitumarca, experience camping in the wilderness and enjoying the walk to and from the rainbow mountain at a leisurely pace. It is not a difficult walk; however, the altitude can be problematic, as you will be ascending gradually from 4787m / 15705ft. to 4891m / 16046ft. Travelers should spend a few days in Cusco first to acclimatize.

Cusco / Racchi/ Combapata / Campsite

We will collect you from your hotel in Cusco and set off in our private vehicle with our own driver, guide and cook. We will head south on the main road to Sicuani/Puno (118km. / 65mi.), turning off at the attractive small town of San Pedro we will visit the Inca ruins of Racchi (3488m. / 11443ft.)

Racchi: The Temple of Wiracocha

The most prominent structure at Racchi is the Temple of Wiracocha, the creator god of Inca mythology. It is an enormous rectangular two-story roofed structure measuring 92 meters by 25.5 meters. This structure consists of a central adobe wall some 18 to 20 meters in height with an andesite stone base. Windows and doors allow passage. It is flanked on each side by a row of eleven columns. The bases of the walls and the columns are made from classic imperial Inca stonework, with the upper sections fashioned from mud brick.

Prior to its destruction by the Spaniards, the temple had what is believed to be the largest single roof in the Inca Empire, with the central wall forming its apex, from which the roof stretched some 25 meters (82 feet) in both directions, where it rested on great columns. The enormous proportions of the temple and its prominent location have led to it being known as the Temple of Wiracocha, in honor of the creator god of Inca religious beliefs.

Our lunch will be served ‘al fresco’ in a pleasant spot with beautiful views.

We will continue to Combapata (11km. / 7mi.) on a paved road, and then along a well-maintained dirt road (10km / 6mi.). At the end of the day, the tents will be set up for the night by our support staff. After a nourishing hot dinner, it will be time to get into our tents, wrapped in extra-thick sleeping bags for a night under the stars.

Special note: Our campsite is located in the heart of an inter-Andean valley, to avoid low temperatures and the possibility of altitude sickness.

Meals: lunch & dinner

Camp/ Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain / Cusco

Following your 06:30 wake-up call it will be time to get dressed and tuck into a hearty cooked breakfast.

We will continue by car uphill to the trailhead (18km. / 11mi.) along a narrow dirt road, passing small settlements and herds of alpacas, accompanied by our guide who will greet local people in Quechua and tell you more about the area.

As the sun rises, we will begin the 2.5km / 1.2mi uphill walk to Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain, ascending from 4786m. / 15702ft. to 4891m. / 16046ft. This ascent is gradual, along a good trail through pastureland, with spectacular views of Mount Ausangate and other snow peaks.

After having enjoyed the incredible views and taken photos, a short walk to Bosque de Piedras (a series of rock formations) awaits us.

The descent will be easier, giving us time to reflect on our experiences over the preceding hours.

Our lunch will be served ‘al fresco’ in a pleasant spot with beautiful views. After lunch, we will board our vehicle for the return trip to Cusco, arriving at around 5 or 6 pm.

Meals: breakfast & lunch
