Cusco / Racchi/ Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain / Bosque de Piedras / Cusco
We will collect you from your hotel in Cusco and set off by private vehicle with our own driver, guide and cook, for the drive south on a paved road (102 km / 63 miles). Turning off at the attractive small town of San Pedro, we will visit the ruins of Racchi (3488 m / 11443 feet), before continuing by vehicle uphill to the trailhead (29 km / 18 miles) along a narrow dirt road, passing small settlements and herds of alpacas, accompanied by our guide who will greet local people in Quechua and tell you more about the area.
From here we will begin our 2.5 km / 1.2 miles uphill walk to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, ascending from 4786 m / 15702 feet to 4891 m / 16046 feet. This ascent is gradual, along a firm trail through pastureland, with spectacular views of Mount Ausangate and other snow peaks.
After having enjoyed the incredible views and taken photos, a short walk to Bosque de Piedras (a series of rock formations) awaits us.
The descent will be easier, giving us time to reflect on our experiences over the preceding hours.
Our lunch will be served ‘al fresco’ in a pleasant spot with beautiful views. After lunch, we will board our vehicle for the return trip to Cusco, arriving at around 5 or 6 pm.
